A public interest litigation petition has been filed in the Madras High Court with a plea that a memorial and a statue for Ma.Ve.Singaravelar, an advocate and freedom fighter, be erected on Kamarajar Salai here.
A.Gowdhaman, an advocate, submitted that Singaravelar lived between 1860 and 1946. He was an advocate practising in the High Court, a freedom fighter, a thinker and philanthropist. He took part in the Non-Cooperation Movement. His residence was on Kamarajar Salai, the present campus of the Lady Willingdon Institute of Advanced Study in Education. The then Governor took over the property and the training school was declared open on December 19, 1922. The takeover was protested, but in vain. A partition deed in 1904 showed that a property was purchased by Singaravelar and he lived there.
