Finance Minister O. Panneerselvam on Thursday turned down the Communist Party of India (Marxist) demand for a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation into the Dharmapuri riots.

Responding to the CPI (M) floor leader A. Soundararajan’s observation in this regard, the Minister said a proper investigation was under way and there was no need for the CBI enquiry.

When Mr. Soundararajan said that cases had been filed against only 19 persons, Higher Education Minister P. Palaniappan, who hails from Dharmapuri district, replied that more than 60 persons had been booked.

Calling upon the government to institute schemes aimed at promoting inter-caste marriages further, the CPI (M) leader criticised the demand in certain quarters for diluting the law on prevention of atrocities against Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes.

He wanted the government to implead itself in the petition regarding the scheme of exclusive reservation for Arundathiars within the overall quota for SCs.

A. Ganeshkumar (Pattali Makkal Katchi) wanted the government to convene a meeting of all parties to discuss the Cauvery dispute.
