A public interest litigation petition has been filed in the Madras High Court for a direction to the Election Commission to derecognise the Pattali Makkal Katchi as functioning against the Representation of the People Act.

The petitioner, R. Varaaki of Tambaram East here, said he was a journalist and founder president of the Indian Makkal Mandram.

He said the Vanniyar Sangam and the PMK had no right to conduct the Chithirai Thiruvizha (festival), which was conducted at Mahabalipuram in Kancheepuram district, on April 25.

He made a representation to the Kancheepuram Collector and the police authorities not to grant permission for the festival.

However, permission was granted for the function.

He alleged that the organisers violated the conditions laid down by police.
