A public interest litigation petition has been filed in the Madras High Court seeking a direction to the Centre to allot the entire 2000 MW to be generated by the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project to Tamil Nadu.
A Vacation Bench comprising Justices C.S. Karnan and K. Ravichandra Baabu before whom the petition came up, posted it for further hearing after the court's summer vacation. The petitioner J. Ramesh of Otteri here said the plant consisted of two reactors, each with a capacity to generate 1000 MW.
Of this, the first reactor is to be loaded with fuel in ten days. Even the entire power generated by the two reactors would not be sufficient to meet the actual demand of the State which was about 15,000 MW.
Generation of power through various sources totalled only 8000 MW.
To meet the increased demand, the State had to spend a huge sum on buying power from other States.
The Tamil Nadu government was requesting the Centre to sympathetically consider its demand that the entire power generated by the Kudankulam project be provided to the State; but the Centre was yet to respond, the petitioner said.
