Petition opposes water stalls with CM’s photo

Display of photo was against court order, says petitioner

October 29, 2013 08:28 am | Updated 09:10 am IST - CHENNAI:

A social activist has moved the Madras High Court seeking a direction to the government to consider his representation not to allow bunks on pavement and bus stands with the photo of the Chief Minister and the ruling party’s symbol.

In the representation he had said the Chennai Corporation allowed bunks to be put up on the pavement for selling water bottles with the Chief Minister’s photo. This was against an order passed by the court in a contempt petition. The petitioner submitted that the civic body itself had opened canteens by violating the food safety rules in nearly 200 places by naming them as “Amma Canteen.” He had sent several representations, lastly on August 6, regarding various `irregularities.’ Till date, there was no response. On the contrary, the civic body had allowed big bunks for selling the water bottles. When the matter came up before a Division Bench comprising Justices S.K.Agnihotri and M.M.Sundresh, time was sought to file the counter affidavit. The court adjourned the matter by four weeks.
