The Periyar University has submitted proposals to Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to start a major research and development facility in specialised areas, said C. Swaminathan, its Vice-Chancellor.
Tie-up
This R and D facility will enable the university to tie-up with DRDO laboratories, Bengaluru, he told presspersons here on Friday. The university was awaiting a call for interface meeting, he said.
The university has submitted a proposal to Tamil Nadu Innovative Initiative (TANII) to set up a start up centre. This will create an ambience for skill development and training.
Periyar University has already made a scheme to start inter-university programmes. In that way two or three universities can join and offer programmes on mutual interest. The expertise and facilities available in each university related to training, research and extension activities can be extended to the students and faculties.
Dr. Swaminathan said that right from application to award of Ph.D degree, a student has to undergo lot of cumbersome mechanism for approvals.
To make these systems student friendly, it has been proposed to revamp the R and D in the next academic year. Students can track the status of theses via university website.
Referring to the future proposals, the Vice-Chancellor said that a major research project worth about Rs. 3 crore was submitted under department clusters to Department of Science and Technology Nano Mission. Ten departments have applied to the University Grants Commission for special assistance programme, he said adding that young faculty members are sanctioned with start up grants by UGC and early career award by DST-Science Engineering Research Board (SERB) division.
The university will install roof top solar panels in Science Block I and II. Each block will be generating 50 KW of solar power.
Already the civil and engineering wings of the university have already commenced the work on this project.
The unique B.Voc under-graduate vocational training programme sponsored by the UGC in Textiles and Food Science disciplines has been widely appreciated in various quarters, he added.
