People have lost faith in EVMs: PMK

Anbumani seeks use of ballot papers in future polls

PMK youth wing leader Anbumani Ramadoss on Tuesday claimed that people have lost faith in electronic voting machines (EVMs) and batted for the return to ballot papers for elections in the future.

In a statement, Mr. Ramadoss said that 16 political parties have already petitioned the Election Commission of India (EC) to henceforth use ballot papers instead of EVMs.

“The EC has said that it will call for an all-party meeting soon. We welcome it. Only in ballot papers can people know which party or candidate they voted for,” he said.

Pointing out how the PMK raised suspicions of faulty EVMs in the 2009 general elections, he said the party had filed a case in this regard.

“Only three out of 118 countries — Venezuela, Brazil and India — use the EVMs. With people losing faith in EVMs, the EC must bring back the ballot papers,” he said.
