Bharathidasan Nagar residents squat on Vilamuthur junction
Residents of Bharathidasan Nagar here, including women, staged a road blockade disrupting vehicular traffic for an hour on Saturday morning demanding immediate solution to the power supply problem.
According to sources, there was no power supply in this area for the past four days and despite numerous representations the situation was not set right by the officials.
Hence, at about 9 a.m. on Saturday, more than 100 residents of the area squatted on Vilamuthur road junction which is a strategic location. Apart from being the road connecting Thuraiyur, Athur, Kallakurichi and Salem, this is the road that connects Old Bus Stand with the New Bus Stand here.
On learning that the public have launched an agitation, tahsildhar Bhava Nandi, chairperson of the municipality Ramesh, and officials from the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation rushed to the spot to hold talks with them.
On the assurance of the officials that power supply would be restored to the area, the agitators dispersed at about 10 a.m.
