While summer vacation is fast approaching, Pearl City beach in Tuticorin is lacking adequate lighting facilities. But for this beach, which was created in 2012, and the Roche Park, people of Tuticorin have no avenue for relaxation and entertainment.

Ahead of the summer vacation, the beach-goers were hoping for a variety of entertainment on this beach. But lack of lighting on the beach had been disappointing, B. Clinton, a regular beach-goer, told The Hindu here on Tuesday.

Though high mast lights were erected at the beach, only five of the 12 lights were working.

Even the skating rink behind the stage on the beach was not lit. More importantly, the beach is wanting even in terms of basic amenities, including potable water and toilets. People spend their leisure relaxing with their families here on weekdays and at weekends, he said.

During rainy days, the sandy beach gotwaterlogged and visitors could hardly access amusement rides such as dragon train, columbus, swing, slide and also the refreshments corner, K. Muthu, a 17-year-old boy, said.

Cultural programmes

To keep the beach alive, cultural programmes and dance performances could be organised on the stage, which lay vacant after the Pongal festival.

Food mela organised in line with the festival attracted scores of people, who enjoyed watching stage programmes after tasting varieties of dishes.

Hence, such programmes need to be organised here, G. Shyamala, another beach-goer, said.

Tuticorin Sub-Collector S. Gopala Sundara Raj said efforts would be taken to ensure required lighting on the beach. Collector M. Ravikumar was contemplating to organise the cultural programmes.
