A consignment of about 300 tonnes of rice meant for public distribution system (PDS) have been detained at the goods yard of the railway station here on Wednesday for non-settlement of freight and other dues by the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation.

Railway sources said that the consignment — five wagons of rice from Andhra Pradesh — were unloaded and transferred to 25 lorries on Wednesday morning. Owing to lack of proper godowns at Dindigul railway station, goods were loaded on lorries directly from the wagons. Only after the bills were settled, the rice bag-laden lorries would be allowed out of the yard, the sources added.

Normally, Dindigul received 3,500 tonnes of PDS rice from Andhra Pradesh from one goods train periodically.
