Pavement level

July 19, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 06:08 am IST

When roads are laid, their level is raised. But pavements are left below the level of roads. As a result, when vehicles cross the pavements they skid and accidents occur. The departments concerned should see that pavements are raised up to the level of the roads to avoid accidents.

Bus facility

Courtallam season has begun. Everyday, hundreds of tourists throng Tirunelveli new bus stand to get seats in Courtallam-bound buses. On weekends and holidays, the rush is heavy. Even though the State Transport Corporation operates special buses on these days, elderly people, women, children and physically challenged people find it very difficult to get seats in these buses. To alleviate the inconvenience caused to the people, the TNSTC may open special counters and issue tickets in advance.

Children of gypsies

Tirunelveli Collector M. Karunakaran has taken the initiative to provide free concrete houses to 37 gypsy families living on the outskirts of Azhagiyapandipuram (July 9, 2016). Such an initiative was successfully carried out by the district administration in Valliyoor some time back and it is encouraging that the families of Azhagiyapandipuram have assured that their 20 children would not be allowed to beg but would go to school. Their culture should also be protected. A separate syllabus may be framed to cultivate their talent. NGOs must come forward to educate these children.

Bad roads

Many roads in Nagercoil have been in a very bad shape since the underground drainage work was taken up two years ago. The work is being done slowly causing inconvenience to everyone. Deep and dangerous pits and treacherous potholes on the road connecting Vadasery, Tower Junction and Kottar are a threat to drivers. Driving a two-wheeler on College Road, State Bank Road and Christu Nagar Road may cause injuries. Frequent traffic jams are common near the old bus stand. Repeated protests expressing concern over the condition of these roads have not yielded any result. I request the authorities to re-lay these roads with high quality material. The contractors must be made accountable for quality. The repair work should be scheduled when the vehicular flow is less.

The State highways and rural roads connecting and passing through villages of the southern part of Tirunelveli district are in a damaged state. Roads in Jeyamathapuram, Periyakulam, Sankanapuram, Jacobpuram, Chidamparapuram, Mathaneri, Azhaneri, Vadakkankulam and Kavalkinaru are bad. The link road is very important as it takes people of Koodankulam, Chettikulam, Koottapuly and Kannankulam to Kavalkinaru Junction for boarding buses to go to other places. I request the Collector to instruct heads of local bodies to repair the roads.

S. J. Sylvestine,

Koottapuly.
