In yet another incident of train robbery in Uttar Pradesh, a couple travelling in the Chennai-bound Tamil Nadu Express were targeted late on Thursday night by robbers who attacked them and decamped with jewellery and cash worth around Rs.15 lakh.
The incident happened around 1.30 a.m. when half-a-dozen armed robbers struck an AC compartment as soon as the train left Mathura station.
It is believed that some robbers had boarded the train at Delhi itself. They pulled the chain after the train left Mathura. As it came to a stop, some of their accomplices entered the coach and attacked the couple. They snatched jewellery and cash at gunpoint before fleeing, police sources said.
The passengers called the police control room and informed them about the incident.
Police and GRP teams reached the spot and registered their complaint. The train later resumed its onward journey.
The male passenger, who was badly injured, was sent to Delhi for treatment.
A joint team of police and GRP searched nearby villages and arrested one suspect, police sources said.
