The Madurai-Rameswaram passenger train suffered a delay of about 45 minutes on Thursday morning when it got stranded at Mandapam, ahead of Pamban Rail Bridge following engine failure.

The passenger train (56723), which left Madurai at 6:50 am reached Mandapam around 9:30 am when the engine developed technical snag. After the loco pilots rectified the fault, the train proceeded to Rameswaram.

The train operated as Rameswaram–Madurai passenger (56722) in the return direction, left Rameswaram after a delay of 20 minutes. The train, scheduled to leave Rameswaram at 11 20 am, left around 11 40 am, officials said.

However, the train services in the Mandapam–Rameswaram sector were not affected since no trains were operated during that period.

The Chennai–Rameswaram express had reached Rameswaram at 8:15 am, well ahead of the passenger, the officials said.
