The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam hoped that all parties which have concern for the unity and welfare of Tamils would join its alliance and the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam was no exception, said party president M.Karunanidhi here on Friday.
“DMDK leader Vijayakant is a good stunt actor and he is proving to be as elusive as in the stunt scenes in films. I had expressed my wish on a couple of occasions that his party should join our alliance. I hope that all those who wanted Tamils to live united with ethnic feeling will support us and Mr.Vijayakant is no exception to it,” he said, commenting on the DMDK’s failure to respond to the DMK’s overtures for forming an alliance so far.
Asked whether there was an opportunity to form a mega alliance comprising the DMK, the DMDK and the Congress, Mr.Karuanidhi observed that the opportunity depended on utilising it.
Speaking to reporters after inspecting the arrangements being made for the 10th State conference of the party to be held here on Saturday and Sunday, Mr.Karunanidhi said he had not discussed the alliance issue with any of the Congress leader or leaders of other parties from North India who met him recently.
He also maintained that there was no political significance behind DMK MP Kanimozhi meeting with Congress president Sonia Gandhi. Ms.Kanimozhi, who had taken ill recently, had only briefed Ms. Gandhi about her health.
Asked whether the Congress was using the 2G issue to browbeat the DMK, Mr.Karunanidhi said although people were inclined to think so from newspaper reports, he did not know the truth. The issue with reference to allegations against former Union Minister A.Raja and others was blown out of proportion by newspapers, which had projected figures (of loss) of Rs.80,000-90,000 crore. But the balloon had burst, leaving a question mark now.
Commenting on pre-poll survey projections that the BJP would emerge as the single largest party, Mr.Karunanidhi said he did not wish to say which party would come to power at the Centre. To a question whether it was ‘political slavery’ on the part of leaders of Left parties to say that Chief Minister Jayalalithaa could become Prime Minister if the non-BJP, non-Congress alliance succeeded, he answered in the affirmative.
