The cadre of Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) celebrated the defeat of Mahinda Rajapaksa in the Sri Lankan Presidential election by bursting firecrackers in the city on Friday.
As soon as the results proclaiming Opposition candidate Maithripala Sirisena leading over Mr. Rajapaksa started pouring in, the MDMK cadre led by K. S. V. Thamaraikannan, district secretary, gathered at the busy five roads junction and burst crackers. They distributed sweets to the passersby besides raising slogans against Mr. Rajapaksa.
The MDMK cadre organised similar celebration in Attur town too.
In Erode , led by Dravida Kazhagam Advocates Wing secretary A. Julius, representatives of a few political parties celebrated the development by bursting firecrackers and distributing sweets in Anthiyur on Friday. New President Maithripala Sirisena must take initiatives to devolve power to the island’s Northern and Eastern provincial councils.
Mr. Rajapaksa must be tried by the International War Crimes Tribunal for the massacre of Eelam Tamils towards the end of the ethnic war, Mr. Julius said.
Kongunadu Makkal Desiya Katchi general secretary E.R. Eashwaran said Mr. Sirisena should treat the Tamils on a par with Sinhalese citizens, work for the economic progress of Tamils, and grant them the denied rights.
He also demanded that Mr. Rajapaksa should be tried for war crimes.
In Dharmapuri , PMK leader and MP Dr.Anbumani Ramadoss led the celebration and said that the new government led by Maithripala Sirisena should help try Mr.Rajapaksa for war crimes.
Congratulating Mr. Sirisena, Mr.Ramadoss wanted the government to provide autonomy to the North, and recall the deployment of the Army from there. He distributed sweets to the cadre at the new bus stand here.
Similarly, MDMK cadre also celebrated the Sri Lankan election outcome by bursting crackers and distributing sweets to people. In Krishnagiri also, similar celebrations were witnessed.
