The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has said that it was a clear case of police excess in Paramakudi where six Dalits lost their lives in police firing.
Speaking to The Hindu in Manjur village on Thursday, A. Soundararajan, leader of a five-member fact-finding team to enquire into the incident, said that eyewitnesses had told them that the police did not give enough warning before opening fire.
They failed to understand the sentiments of people and the situation.
The mismanagement and intelligence failure cost six lives. The police did not follow basic prerequisites before opening fire.
Mr. Soundarrajan said that it was not proper for the State government to start the proceedings of inquiry commission without taking action against police officers responsible for the incident.
They should be immediately suspended.
Otherwise the commission could not get the correct picture of the incident.
Averring that it was not a caste clash, K. Balakrishnan MLA said that it was incorrect to give a casteist colour to the police firing.
The issue was between police and agitators.
Mr. Soundararajan said that the promulgation of section 144 was not required when there had been no communal or caste clash in the district.
It was an attempt to suppress the sentiments and rights of people.
