Para sports team clinches gold, silver at athletic meet

The Alagappa University Para Sports Team brought laurels to the State and the varsity, winning gold and silver medals at the dwarf National-level athletic meet held in Bengaluru on December 12 and 13.

Vice Chancellor of Alagappa University S. Subbiah congratulated the winners – S. Sivarajan, A. Selvaraj and G. Ganesan – and appreciated the efforts taken by M. Sundar, coach and principal of Alagappa University College of Physical Education.

In all, 12 states participated in the meet and Tamil Nadu was represented by a team of four – three men and a woman – from the Alagappa University Para Sports Centre, a university release said on Tuesday.

Sivarajan won a gold medal in 200 metres and silver medals in 100 metres dash and 4x100 metres relay. Selvaraj won a gold in javelin throw and silver in 4x100 metres relay.

Ganesan won a silver in shot put, the release also said.

Meanwhile, Mr. Subbiah said the university was establishing a Para Sports Training Centre here with the help of Rs. 65 lakh sanctioned by the Tamil Nadu government.

The centre would train differently abled sports persons and help them compete at the state, national and international sports events, he said.

The varsity has signed a MoU with the Tamil Nadu Paralympic Sports Association, Chennai for collaborative training, he said.

A coach has been appointed to exclusively train para sports persons, he also added.
