Panchayat pump operator stabbed

March 04, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:49 am IST - TIRUNELVELI:

The pump operator of a village panchayat was stabbed at Burkitmanagar near here on Tuesday evening due to prior enmity.

Police said Pauldurai of Avinaperi near here had encroached upon a land belonging to Burkitmanagar panchayat.

When the rural local body retrieved the land from Pauldurai, a water tank was constructed there. Pauldurai suspected that the land was retrieved from him only after S. Murugan (50), panchayat’s pump operator from Burkitmanagar, had informed the panchayat administration about the encroachment.

When Mr. Murugan came to the water tank for releasing water on Tuesday evening, Pauldurai allegedly stabbed him. With multiple injuries, the victim has been admitted to Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital. His condition is said to be “stable”.

Tirunelveli Taluk police are on the lookout for Pauldurai.

Women attacked

In another incident, P. Shanthi (42), a widow from Rajagopalapuram under Perumalpuram police station limits was hacked by her brother-in-law C. Muthukumar of the same area in a property dispute on Tuesday evening. The condition of the victim is said to be “critical”.

In the third incident, S. Chandra (40), a widow from Thenpaththu under Suththamalli police station limits was hacked by an unidentified person when she was returning home from the farm on Tuesday evening.

In the last attack, Pattu (60), a carpenter from Melanaththam under Suththamalli police station limits was hacked by two unidentified persons when he was at home on Tuesday evening.

During investigation, police found that Pattu’s son Suresh, who died recently, had borrowed money from an usurer. Since he had not repaid the loan, the police suspect that usurer’s men might have attacked the carpenter.
