The district administration has declared 34 panchayats in the district ‘open defecation-free’ and announced that it proposed to construct 47,230 individual toilets during 2015-16 in all the 429 panchayats.
Honouring the presidents of the 34 panchayats at a meeting here on Friday, Collector K. Nanthakumar said after selecting 43 panchayats to make them ‘open defecation-free’ by October 2, the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) had covered 34 panchayats.
He exhorted the other panchayat presidents to encourage ‘toilet less’ households to build the toilets under the Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) and Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS).
The DRDA had fixed a target to build 12,973 toilets in 43 panchayats and had made 34 panchayats ‘open defecation free’ after building 8,688 toilets in all the ‘toilet less’ households, Project Director A. Palani said.
The agency proposed to build 47,230 individual toilets in all the 429 panchayats during 2015-16, he said.
The ‘two leach pit’ model toilets would be built by offering a subsidy of Rs 12,000 for each beneficiary under the back ended subsidy scheme.
He said the beneficiaries would be free to construct the toilets as per their design and need but the toilets would be under the “two leach model,” which would not require removal of the sludge.
