Roman Catholic and Church of South India community members jointly took out ‘Palm Sunday’ processions here to remember the triumphal entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem just five days before he was crucified.

Bishop of Palayamkottai RC Diocese Most Rev. A. Jude Paulraj and Bishop of Tirunelveli CSI Diocese Rt. Rev. J.J. Christdoss inaugurated the procession at Angelo Matriculation Higher Secondary School after a brief sermon. The processionists reached St. Xavier’s Cathedral via St. John’s College.

Similar processions were jointly organised by the CSI and the RC Christians in various parts of the district which were followed by Palm Sunday Holy Masses, in which the parishioners participated in large numbers carrying palm fronds.

Nagercoil

The Christians in the district offered special payers on Palm Sunday, which marks the beginning of the Holy Week.

The faithful took part in the processions carrying palm fronds blessed by the Vicars. Hundreds of people participated in the processions organised by various churches.

The palm fronds would be taken home by the people to be preserved till the Ash Wednesday next year. Many craft them into Crosses and displayed them.

Bishop of Kottar Diocese Peter Remigius led the procession around St. Xavier’s Church in Kottar in Nagercoil and conducted a special prayer at the church.

Tuticorin

Parishioners in large numbers took out a procession in various parts of Tuticorin. Special prayers were offered on culmination of the processions. Rev Fr. Yvon Ambroise, Bishop of Tuticorin Roman Catholic Diocese, led the prayer at Sacred Heart Church on WGC Road and Fr. Lerin Derose, Parish Priest, at Our Lady of Snows Shrine Basilica on beach road.
