Palar issue: KMDK seeks all-party delegation

August 08, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 08:07 am IST - ERODE:

Kongunadu Makkal Desiya Katchi general secretary E.R. Eashwaran on Sunday urged the Opposition Leader in the Assembly to lead an all-party delegation to prevail upon the Central Government to restrain Andhra Pradesh from constructing a reservoir across Palar River, in the event of Chief Minister Jayalalithaa failing to do so.

Reluctance of a Chief Minister to convene all-party meetings to discuss issues of common interest was missing only in Tamil Nadu, Mr. Eashwaran said, charging the Andhra Pradesh Government with arresting labourers hailing from Tamil Nadu to divert the Palar issue.

Meeting

The recent instances of ruling party insinuating the Opposition in the Assembly was a worrisome trend, he told mediapersons after the party’s State General Council meeting.

Mr. Eashwaran came down heavily on visual media saying the debates they conduct on topics relating to castes and religions was fostering sectarianism. While violence against Dalits was unacceptable, politicisation of certain deaths with the tag ‘honour killing’ was deplorable, he said.

The KMDK, he said, was not convinced about the State Government’s sincerity in giving shape to the Avinashi - Athikadavu and Pandiyaru - Punnambuzha scheme.

A resolution was adopted to join hands with like-minded parties that would support strengthening of Kongu region ahead of the October elections to local bodies.

The other resolutions encompassed a demand for waiver of loans issued through cooperative societies as well as nationalised banks, immediate steps to end the protest by powerloom workers, complete waiver of education loans, consent for elimination of peafowl as in Goa for safeguarding agriculture, and prompt steps for installing portrait of freedom fighter Deeran Chinnamalai in Parliament.

CBI probe sought

Mr. Eashwaran urged the Chief Minister to press for a CBI probe into the mysterious death of IPS officer Sasikumar of Andhra Pradesh cadre, who hailed from Sathyamangalam.
