Paddy harvesting under way in Kolli Hills

The average rainfall that the district receives is 687.51 mm, but the district has so far received only 96.36 mm rainfall in the current year, said Collector V. Dakshinamoorthy here on Friday.

During the farmers’ grievances day meeting held at Collectorate here, he said that the district has received very low rainfall so far and hoped that the district receive good rainfall in the coming days.

He said that the area under cultivation include, paddy 30 hectare, oil seeds 2,257 hectare, cotton 552 hectare, sugarcane 643 hectare, millets 1,919 hectares and others at 3,126 hectares.

Thus a total of 8,527 hectares are currently under cultivation, he added.

The Collector said that paddy harvesting is currently underway in Kolli Hills and said that monsoon rain will improve the production in other areas.

Salem

The district received 98 mm rainfall till Friday morning while Vazhapadi received the maximum of 16 mm, according to a release here.

Rainfall recorded in other places include Attur 5.6 mm, Yercaud 12.4 mm, Gangavalli 5.3 mm, Thammampatti 6.4 mm, Veeraganur 11.5 mm, Sankari 5 mm and Kariyakovil 11 mm.
