Thousands of bags of paddy stocked by farmers in the open ground inside the Cheyyar regulated market were damaged in the recent rains.

As the majority of the paddy crops raised by farmers in the district wilted due to the failed monsoon this year, whatever little crops that survived the drought were being harvested since a week ago. Farmers in and around Cheyyar bring their produce to the Cheyyar regulated market whose godown has already reached its capacity. The farmers, therefore, had to stock their bags of paddy in the open ground for traders to buy them. Meanwhile, Cheyyar received rain on Monday which damaged the paddy stocked in the open space.

S.Balaraman, District President of Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam, said that farmers complained that about 4,000 bags of paddy were damaged in the rain. They have been demanding a shed apart from the existing godown to stock paddy.
