Overflowing waters due to heavy rains from the filled up Nallur tank in the district flooded 800 huts in Punjai Puliampatty area this morning, but all the residents were evacuated, officials said.
The heavy rain also resulted in a nine foot rise in water level in the Gunderipallam reservoir in Sathyamangalam in a day, officials said.
Sathyamangalam, Bhavanisagar, Punjai Puliampatty and Nambiyur in Erode district experienced very heavy rain today, they said.
Police and revenue personnel rushed to the spot on receiving information and evacuated all the inmates as also their livestock to safer areas, they said.
Vehicular traffic in Punjai Puliampatty-Sathyamangalam main road was affected for some time. Power supply was stopped.
Officials said more than 300 huts in Nambiyur, Simmitampalayam and Sundakkampalayam near Nambiyur areas were flooded, but the waters receded by noon.
For the 24 hours ending 8 a.m. on Thursday, Bhavanisagar recorded 117.2 mm of rainfall, Sathyamangalam and Gobichettipalayam recorded 86 mm each, Orathupalayam 60 mm, Kodivery 53 mm, Muthur 49 mm, Pungambady 46 mm, Chennimalai 41 mm, Arachalaure 38 mm, Elandaikuttaimedu and Bhavani received 28 mm each, Modakurichi 23 mm and Erode 18 mm.
Officials said the level of the Gunderipallam reservoir recorded a nine foot rise due to 120 mm rainfall. the level increased from 21 feet to 29.30 feet.
Perumpallam reservoir area recorded 204 mm of rainfall, resulting in an increase in dam level.
Rain in Orathupalayam, Chennimalai and surrounding areas resulted in a steep increase in inflow into the Orthupalayam to 1784 cusecs against 20 cusecs in the last two days.
The dam level was 15.74 feet against the full level of 40 feet and 536 cusecs has been discharged into Noyyal River, officials said.
