Over 94,200 IHHL to be constructed in Salem district this year

The district administration has proposed to construct 94,243 Individual Household Latrine (IHHL) for the year 2015-16.

A press release from the Collector K. Maharabushanam said that 2, 82,406 toilets were proposed to be constructed in all the 385 village panchayats in five years in the district. A survey conducted in 2012 revealed that of the total 5, 21,869 families in the district, 2, 82,406 houses do not have toilet facilities. Hence, for 2013-14, 19,303 toilets were constructed while 17,663 toilets were constructed in 2014-15 and were in use. Hence, to prevent open defecation, the administration has proposed to construct 94,243 toilets in villages. The unit cost of IHHL has been raised from Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 12,000 and villagers are asked to utilise the opportunity and construct toilets in their homes.

The release said that bio-toilet system was implemented in the district and the cost-effective toilets were presently in use in Nangavalli Union. These toilets were constructed at a cost of Rs. 5,700 each, the release said.
