Driving without licence, overloading of goods in vehicles, vehicles without insurance certificates were the major offences detected in Tamil Nadu by enforcement officials during 2016-17, according to a policy note of the Motor Vehicles Act-Administration Department.
During inspection of 28,599 vehicles used as school buses, 2,098 were found to be defective. On re-inspection of the vehicles after rectification of defects, 169 failed to turn up for inspection and it has been ensured that they are back on road, the note states. A total of 1,972 cases of overloading of children in buses of educational institutions were also reported.
As for drunken driving, the number of driving licences suspended and cancelled during 2016-17 was 4,552 and 1,186 respectively. Action had been taken against drivers involved in fatal accidents and a total of 6,723 and 64 driving licences were suspended and cancelled respectively during 2016-17.
As on March 31, 2017, a total of 238.45 lakh vehicles (12.34 lakh transport and 226.11 lakh non-transport vehicles) were plying in Tamil Nadu, second highest in the country, while the highest was in Maharashtra.
About 19 lakh vehicles were issued registration certificates in the State during 2016-17 alone.
