Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami announced on Tuesday, at the Teachers’ Day celebrations organised by the State government, that 3,336 post-graduate teachers would be recruited through the course of the current academic year for appointment in schools across the State.
“The government will take all efforts to fill in vacancies and, with more government schools opening, there will be more opportunities for teachers as well. As many as 748 computer science teachers will be appointed as well,” Mr. Palaniswami said.
To mark Teachers’ Day, the Dr. Radhakrishnan awards were distributed to 383 teachers from across the State at the event.
More students
The Chief Minister said that student enrolments had increased over the last few years, and further explained that by introducing the class 11 board exams and the revamped curriculum,the government was doing its best to prepare students to attempt competitive exams at a national level.
“While housing for teachers on transfer in Chennai and Tiruchi has been initiated, the scheme will soon be extended to Coimbatore as well,” he added.
Minister for School Education K.A. Sengottaiyan, who also spoke at the event, said that the work being carried out to revise the curriculum for State board schools for a few classes including class 11 in the first phase, would finish by the end of September.
Schools across the city also organised a host of programmes. G.J. Manohar, Headmaster and Correspondent of the Madras Christian College Higher Secondary School, and Edith Deva Thayanithi, Headmistress of the CSI Middle School in Chennai, were among those who received the National Award for Teachers in Delhi on Tuesday.
Uber scheme
Uber, one of the fast-expanding taxi aggregators in the country, to commemorate Teacher’s Day has launched Uber Scholars in the city. Through this scholarship initiative, the ridesharing company would be providing scholarship to the children of over 100 driver partners in the State. The scholarship would cover students studying from kindergarten to college and the education fee would be borne by the company.
Arjun Srinivasan, General Manager, Uber – Chennai said, “The project is aimed at engaging the driver partners by ensuring quality education for their children through the Uber Scholar program. Scholarship of up to ₹15,000 each would be eligible to the partners thereby making education a reality for many more children.”
The Uber Scholars programme has already benefited a number of children of the Uber drivers who are studying in Madras Christian College, Sri Ramanujar Engineering College in Chennai, and Velammal New Gen Park School.
