The organs of a 45-year-old man from Salem district were donated after he was declared brain dead, at a hospital in Chennai on Wednesday.

K. Mariappan of Moongilpadi in Omalur taluk was working as a supervisor at a coconut shell polishing unit in the area. On April 2, while he was on way home, his vehicle was hit by an unknown vehicle near Karuppur tollgate at 6 p.m. He was admitted to a private hospital in the area in a critical condition. Later, he was shifted to Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him brain dead. When relatives consulted BJP district president R.P. Gopinath, he convinced family members to donate his organs. On April 5, he was shifted to a private hospital in Chennai for organ donation. His eyes, kidney, heart and lungs were retrieved and donated to five persons.
