Responding to the call given by the Tamil Nadu Bishops’ Council, a rally was held in Vellore against the Union Government’s initiative to draft a new education policy.
The rally, organised by the Catholic Church and Church of South India, began in front of the Holy Cross School and proceeded to the Vellore Collectorate.
Catholic Bishop P. Soundararaju led the rally.
A.C. Savarimuthu, manager of RCM schools said that the new education policy inputs are against the minorities’ education services and rights.
‘Full of inconsistencies’
He termed that the draft was full of inconsistencies.
He said that Centre should give up its efforts to saffronise education and a plan to evolve national curriculum in some subjects.
The Centre needs to respect the separation of powers between States and the Union Government while drafting a new education policy. New committee has to be set up to draft a new education policy and the committee should have representations from experts from the fields of education, anthropology, sociology, psychology, law and other disciplines apart from social groups such as SC, ST, OBC, minorities and women.
At the end of the rally they handed over a petition to the Collector insisting on their demands.
