Oppose Centre’s move to privatise SSP: Vaiko

August 06, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 08:00 am IST - SALEM:

The move of the Centre to privatise the Salem Steel Plant (SSP) is shocking and the State Government should oppose the same tooth and nail, said Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) leader Vaiko.

The Centre should do away with its move of disinvestment of SSP, Mr. Vaiko told presspersons here on Friday.

The Centre made attempts to privatise the Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC) in the past and later dropped the move following stiff opposition, he said.

Mr. Vaiko said that farm activities were totally hit in Tamil Nadu due to the refusal of the Karnataka Government to release adequate water in the Cauvery. The Karnataka Government should immediately suspend the works on the construction of two dams, including the one at Mekadathu across River Cauvery.

Mr. Vaiko criticised the Andhra Pradesh Government for constructing a dam across River Palar in violation of the 1992 agreement between both the states.

Referring to the fresh arrests of Tamils by the Andhra Pradesh on the pretext of checking felling of red sanders, Mr. Vaiko said that Andhra Pradesh police were continuously committing atrocities against innocent Tamils.

More than 8,000 people belonging to Tamil Nadu had been languishing in the prisons of Andhra Pradesh. The Tamil Nadu Government should speak with the Andhra Pradesh Government to put an end to this.
