Ooty to be made hoarding free

March 31, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:33 am IST - Udhagamandalam:

Steps will be initiated by April 1 to rid this holiday destination of flex boards and graffiti on public walls, declared Municipal Commissioner K.Sivakumar while participating in a meeting of the Udhagamandalam Municipal Council (UMC) on Monday.

Responding to a reference made by a member J.Ravikumar (DMK) to a recent incident relating to the violent reaction of some persons including members of the council to efforts of a Make Ooty Beautiful (MOB) campaign to repaint a wall which had political graffiti, the Commissioner said that he had not been informed about it.

He added that the Adam’s Fountain at Charing Cross would also be kept free of hoardings and posters. Pointing out that the compound wall of the municipal market was defaced with posters, R.Madhavan (AIADMK) said that those responsible should be fined.

With all the members complaining about the town being in darkness on account of many of the streetlights not serving their purpose, Municipal Chairperson K. Sathyabama, who presided, suggested that the council should pass a resolution requesting the government to permit the municipality to maintain the streetlights.

Action will be taken to remove Aavin booths which have mushroomed in the town.
