The long-awaited Ooratchikottai Drinking Water Scheme is to be brought under the ambit of the recently-launched AMRUT (Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation) scheme of Union Ministry of Urban Development.

Estimate

The earlier estimate of Rs. 409 crore would be revised. Based on the suggestions provided by the consultant to be appointed for implementation of Smart City project, the rate revision would be arrived at, said Corporation Commissioner R. Mohan.

The Ooratchikottai water scheme promises 135 litres per capita per day for domestic consumption.

At present, the supplies are being made under various combined drinking water schemes fulfilling 108 litres per capita per day.

The advantage of linking Ooratchikottai drinking water project to AMRUT is that other related basic infrastructure services such as sewerage, septage management, storm water drains, transport and development of green spaces and parks with special provision for meeting needs of children are also covered.

The Central Government had recently approved Central spending of one lakh crore rupees under the two new urban missions over the next five years, at an outlay of Rs. 48,000 crore for Smart City project, and Rs. 50,000 crore for AMRUT.

The Smart City project will be implemented in 100 cities and AMRUT in 500 cities and towns each with a population of one lakh and above.
