Only three of the five units of Tuticorin Thermal Power Station (TTPS) are generating power now.
While the third unit was being overhauled and expected to resume its generation on June 15, the second had been kept on standby, sources told The Hindu here on Sunday.
The first unit, which was in standby mode, started generating power from Friday after the second unit broke down due to a steam leak that was detected on Thursday. A team of technical experts fixed the problem in the second unit, but was instructed to keep it on standby in the wake of high wind energy generation.
Each of the five TTPS units had a capacity to generate 210 MW. Now, the first, fourth and fifth units were in service, the sources said.
The growing production of wind power, a non-conventional energy form, had reduced the conventional power generation through thermal units. The wind season picked up in May, catering much to the electricity consumption demands, they said.
