A gas leak was detected at an underground pipeline of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) at Kuthalam near Mayiladuthurai on Saturday.

A group of farm workers noticed bubble in the ground and smell of gas when they were working in a field. They alerted the Fire and Rescue Service, police and revenue authorities. A team of ONGC officials rushed to the spot and replaced the damaged portion of pipe.

A senior revenue official told The Hindu that it was a minor incident and the situation was brought under control quickly.
