Herd chased back into the forests

A herd of wild elephants that were on a day out in Hosur on Sunday morning caused panic and trampled M. Muniyappa (66) of Sathanur Village to death, before being chased into Thally Reserve Forest.

The death took place at Madhagondapalli in Krishnagiri district on Sunday morning, when the victim Muniyappa had gone for attending to nature’s call in the agriculture field near his residence around 5 a.m., despite warning by the forest officials to the people not to venture out of their homes.

A.K. Ulaganathan, District Forest Officer, told The Hindu that the forest officials and employees, who found the herd in eucalyptus farm near Anekkal in the morning, drove it into the Thally Reserve Forest.

Meanwhile, the information about the death of the senior citizen was informed by the public.

Immediately, his body was brought to the Denkanikottai taluk hospital for postmortem.

The authorities handed over Rs. 25,000 to M. Seethamma, wife of the deceased, at her residence.

On getting the death certificate and complying with legal formalities, some more compensation would be paid to her, Mr. Ulaganathan added.
