One of nine students, who had launched an indefinite fast at the Mullivaikal Mutram here, demanding that the United Nations adopt a resolution seeking a referendum on creation of the separate Eelam in the Tamil areas of Sri Lanka, was admitted to hospital after suffering seizures.
P. Karthick, who looked visibly tired on Monday, was rushed to a private hospital in Thanjavur after he developed seizures at the venue in the evening.
On Monday, four more students joined the five college students who had been on an indefinite fast from Saturday at the memorial here created for Tamils who died in Sri Lanka.
The students urged the Union government to honour the resolution adopted in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly and press the United Nations to adopt a resolution on the Eelam issue.
They also demanded an inquiry by an international autonomous agency into the alleged war crimes in Sri Lanka.
While five students, P. Karthick, S. Arunkumar, G. Yuvaraj, S. Jayaprakash and A. Sivaraj commenced fast on Saturday, they were joined by I. Simon and S. Dinesh, S. Thyagu and K. Manimaran on Monday. The students were from different colleges and universities from across the State.
Mr. Jayaprakash said that they would continue the fast until their demands were met fully.
“We will continue our fast. The Centre should take appropriate steps before March 28 when the U.N. Human Rights Council session at Geneva ends,” he said.
He claimed that they had initially started the fast at Sengodi Arangam at Koyambedu on Friday but were forced to move to Mullivaikal Mutram after being asked to vacate the place by the Chennai police.
