The operational capability of Mandapam station of Indian Coast Guard (ICG) is all set to enhance as it received one more state-of-the-art UK-made Air Cushion Vehicle Hovercraft – ACV H 197.
The induction of the Hovercraft, the third in the UK-made ACVs series and the sixth Hovercraft, added more teeth to the strategically located Mandapam station.
This comes close on the heels of the induction of a state-of-the-art interceptor boat in February.
“The newly commissioned ACV H 197 arrived on Sunday night and has been based at Mandapam,” an official release said. The craft is fitted with latest state-of-the-art navigational equipment and is capable of undertaking multi tasks such as close-to-coast surveillance and interception.
It said the Hovercraft could be pressed into search and rescue operations and could assist small boats in distress at sea, the release said.
The Craft commanded by a commandant, two officers and 11 personnel on board would be operated under the control of Commander ICG Mandapam station.
“With the arrival of ACV H-197 at Mandapam, the operational capability in and adjoining area of Palk Bay coast will be further enhanced,” the release added.
The induction of the Craft added to Mandapam station’s fleet of three interceptor boats, six hovercrafts, including three UK-made ACV Hovercraft and two interceptor craft.
