A worker, V. Sabarimalayan (36), was killed when a fire broke out in Anil Fireworks factory at Suraarpatti in Vembakottai near here on Friday forenoon.

The police said Sabarimalayan was filling pellets in tubes for making fancy crackers, when a spark caused by the friction triggered the fire. He was killed on the spot. One working shed was damaged.

Deputy Chief Controller of Explosives R. Venugopal said decomposition of chemicals could have led to the accident. A thorough investigation was under way at the accident site. He said the licence of the unit would be suspended.

Sivakasi Revenue Divisional Officer R. Keerthi Priyadarshini, who rushed to the spot, supervised the rescue work.

Virudhunagar Collector T.N. Hariharan inspected the accident site.

The Elayirampannai police have booked three persons — the owner, manager and foreman of the unit — under Sections 286 (negligent conduct with respect to explosive substance) and 304 A (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Indian Penal Code and the provisions of the Explosives Act.
