An elderly person was killed and eight others sustained injuries when a private bus ploughed into a house and a tea shop on Airport Road at Lawspet on Thursday afternoon.

The bus, which was coming from the airport to the town, suffered a mechanical problem and the driver lost control. It first hit the house and then the adjacent tea shop.

Pandurangan (76), who was inside the shop, sustained serious injuries. He was rushed to Government Hospital, where he died, police said.

As others inside the shop ran to safety, Pandurangan could not because of an orthopaedic problem, police said. Eight passengers sustained minor injuries and were treated as outpatients at the government hospital.

A case has been registered under Sections 279, 304 (A) and 337 of the Indian Penal Code. The driver and crew members fled the spot, police said.
