Teachers’ Day celebrated

Teacher's Day was celebrated at N.M.S. Sermathai Vasan College for Women, Madurai, on September 6 with a talk by Suga Jeevitha on the goals of life. Students also presented a cultural programme on the occasion. Principal D. Karthiga Rani welcomed the gathering. G. Mariskumar delivered the presidential address. Vice Principal Valliammal proposed a vote of thanks.

CENTAC 2k16

The Civil Engineering Department of Velammal College of Engineering and Technology, Madurai, conducted Civil Enlighten Tactics – CENTAC 2k16, a programme to expose students to various innovations, on September 3. In his inaugural address, S. Ratnavel, chairman ICI, Madurai centre, focussed on the opportunities for civil engineers and the qualities they should possess. Head of the department, L. Andal, welcomed the gathering. N. Suresh Kumar, Principal, delivered the presidential address. Vice-chairman Ganesh Natrajan advised the students to update themselves on recent technologies in civil engineering. M. Sathish Kumar, Assistant Professor, explained the objectives of the event. Student secretary P. Prabhakar proposed a vote of thanks.

Two-day orientation programme

The Regional Centre of Indira Gandhi National Open University conducted a two-day orientation programme for MA (English) Academic Counsellors of the south zone from September 9. Thirty five Academic Counsellors from Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Vishakapatnam, Bengaluru, Bijapur, Chennai, Madurai, Port Blair, Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Vatakara participated in the programme, which was inaugurated by Muthumanickam, Chairperson, School of Education, Madurai Kamaraj University. In his address, Prof. Muthumanickam highlighted the need for professional development for academic counsellors to make open and distant learning system a success. Malati Mathur and Neera Singh of the School of Humanities, IGNOU, New Delhi, were the resource persons. Mohanan, Regional Director, welcomed the participants.

Tourism and development

The Department of Economics of Yadava College, Madurai, organised a seminar on 'Tourism and development' on August 19. M. Karuppanalagu, Head, welcomed the participants. The Principal (in charge), S. Dhanasekaran, delivered the presidential address. V. T. Thiruppathy delivered the keynote address. S. Kaviya Sri proposed a vote of thanks.

On mechanical engineering

A lecture on 'Basic concepts of mechanical engineering' was delivered by N. Shanmugam, former professor, at a meeting organised by Fatima Michael College of Engineering and Technology, Madurai, on September 7. P. Nelson Raja, Principal, presided over the lecture.

Alumnae meet

The eighth annual alumnae meet of Madurai Sivakasi Nadars Pioneer Meenakshi Women’s College, Poovanthi, was held on September 4. Around 210 old students participated in the meet to share memories and also participate in various games.

S. Shobana, president, Alumnae Association, welcomed the gathering. J. Ashok, assistant secretary, delivered the presidential address.

C. Ramalakshmi, Principal, offered felicitations. R. Poongkuzhali, Head, Department of Tamil, delivered a special address. D. Dhivya, secretary, Alumnae Association, proposed a vote of thanks.

The Research Department of Tamil of the college conducted ‘Muthtamizhi Vizha’ on September 8, featuring folk dance and play. It was inaugurated by Ashok. G. Gnanasambanthan, Professor Emeritus, Thiagarajar College, who delivered a talk on 'Ilalkkiyangalil Nagaichuvai.' P. Karthigaiselvi, Assistant Professor, proposed a vote of thanks.

Special event for teachers

Teacher's Day was celebrated at Pandian Saraswathi Yadav Engineering College, Arasanoor, on September 3 with several events for teachers of PSY Group of institutions. Chairman S. Pandian presided over the event.

Teachers participated in sports events and presented a cultural programme. Principal V. Dharmalingam welcomed the gathering.

Health Fest’2K16

National Nutrition Week Health Fest’2K16 was celebrated by the Department of Food Science and Technology of Arul Anandar College, Karumathur, on September 7.

It was inaugurated by District Child Development Project Officer Curlin Selvarani. In her address, Ms. Curlin highlighted the importance of balanced diet. The resource persons of the event included Suganya, Senior Dietician, Apollo Specialty Hospitals, and Parvathi, Dean, Home Science College and Research Institute. Students were exposed to lectures on healthy lifestyle, diet and exercise. Various competitions were conducted on the theme, ‘Savour your flavour of eating right’.

The programme was conducted with the objective of creating awareness among students on nutrition and healthy life. Students from more than 10 colleges participated in the event.

Access to library resources

A lecture on 'Access to library resources' was delivered by S. Gopalakrishnan of Velammal College of Engineering and Technology, at a meeting organised by the Library Advisory Council and Department of Botany of Arumugam Pillai Seethai Ammal College, Tiruppattur, on August 19. In his address, Dr. Gopalakrishnan gave a comprehensive picture of the library resources available for students and highlighted the need to develop the reading habit. N. Ramani, Vice-Principal, presided over the function.

Microbes–2016

A State-level intercollegiate meet, 'Microbes – 2016,' was organised by the Department of Microbiology, Ayya Nadar Janaki Ammal College, Sivakasi, on September 8. Principal V. Pandiyarajan, in his inaugural address, highlighted the role of student community in nation development. Teams from nine colleges from all over Tamil Nadu participated in the meet in which Thiagarajar College, Madurai, bagged the overall championship. P. Ponmanickam, Head, Department of Microbiology, welcomed the gathering. Dr. Pandiyarajan distributed prizes and certificates to the winners in the valedictory session. P. Maheswari, organising secretary, proposed a vote of thanks.

On cyber security

A programme on 'Cyber security,' with Arul Selvar Thomas and Sathish Ashwin of National Cyber Defence Research Centre as resource persons, was organised by the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and Information Technology of Sri Vidya College of Engineering and Technology, Virudhunagar, recently.

Principal S. Sangaralingam presided over the programme.

P. Murugeswari Head, Department of CSE and IT, welcomed the gathering.

K. Fathima proposed a vote of thanks.

Eye screening camp at Maraneri

The Youth Red Cross, Blood Donors Club and Extension Activity Cell of Standard Rajaratnam College for Women, Sivakasi, conducted an eye screening camp on September 8 at Maraneri in which 86 primary school students were screened.

The camp was conducted by Anil Kumar Eye Hospital, Sivakasi, with the assistance of 20 volunteers from the college.

Those who addressed the participants included Assistant Professors B. Meenakshi and J. Vallimayil; S. Anuradha, District Science AEO and V. Selvalakshmi, Additional Assistant Elementary Educational Officer.

A helping hand

Computer system and chairs were donated to the Government High School, Sukkiravarpatti, on behalf of Sri Kaliswari Fireworks by S. Krishnamurthy, Principal, Sri Kaliswari College, at a function held on August 31. School Headmaster Muniyandi welcomed the gathering.

Nurturing talent in sports

The 26th annual sports meet of S.E.V. Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Madurai, was declared open by K. Hari Thiagarajan, Executive Director, Thiagarajar Mills, on September 2.

A colourful march past, mass drill, karate, yoga and silambam demonstration by the students were the highlights of the event.

Winners of various sports events were presented with trophies and certificates during the function.

Annual sports meet held

The 34th annual sports meet of Sri Ramakrishna Mutt Sarada Vidyalaya Nursery and Primary School, Madurai, was held on September 3.

It was declared open by Swami Saradananda, president, Sri Ramakrishna Mutt, Rameshwaram. Jeyarani welcomed the gathering.

Correspondent Swami Kamalatmananda, gave the benedictory address.

There was a mass drill by UKG to fifth standard students and karate demonstration.

There were also special games for parents and old students. S. Thiripurasundari proposed a vote of thanks.
