Big Data Analytics

The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering of K.L.N. College of Information Technology, Pottapalayam, conducted a 10-day training programme on ‘Big Data Analytics’ from June 23. In his inaugural address, S. Nickolas, Head, Department of Computer Applications, NIT-Tiruchi, explained the importance of the new emerging research field and the tremendous growth of database in various sectors like banking, aeronautics and meteorology. K. N. K. Karthik, president, KLNCIT, presided over the inaugural session. K. N. K. Ganesh, correspondent, addressed the participants. J. S. Gnanasekaran, Principal, welcomed the gathering and P. Venkatakrishnan, Head, Department of ECE, proposed a vote of thanks. More than 100 participants from various colleges and industries attended the programme.

Library orientation programme

Library orientation programme was organised for students of N.M.S. Sermathai Vasan College for Women, Madurai, on June 30. College president G. Mariskumar presided over the inaugural function. Principal D. Karthiga Rani offered felicitations. College Librarian S. Poompavai delivered a talk on “Library and its uses and importance of reading.”

The Department of English of Madurai Sivakasi Nadars’ Pioneer Meenakshi Women’s College, Poovanthi, conducted an orientation programme on “How to improve communication skills in English” on June 28. D. Amala, Associate Professor, Department of English, Sri Meenakshi Government College for Women, explained the ways to improve communication skills. R. Soniya Gandhi, Assistant Professor, welcomed the participants and N.S. Harini, first year B.A. proposed a vote of thanks.

Symposium on English language teaching

An inter-collegiate symposium on ‘English language teaching, literary theories and world literature,’ organised by the Department of English, was inaugurated at The American College, Madurai, by M. Davamani Christober, Principal, on June 29. J. Paul Jayakar, coordinator, welcomed the delegates. S. Stanley Mohan Doss Stephen, J. John Sekar, Head, Research Department of English, and G. Dominic Savio were the resource persons. A total of 412 students from 12 colleges in and around Madurai district participated in the symposium. Helen Ratna Monica, Bursar, delivered the valedictory address and distributed certificates to participants. Joseph Ahiman Benitez proposed a vote of thanks.

Fatima Day

Fatima Day were celebrated by Fatima College, Madurai, on July 2. Rev. Fr. M. Maria Michael, Parish Priest and Vicar Forane, Christ the King Church, solemnised the occasion. D. M. Kamini, president (self-financing courses), Student Union, welcomed the gathering. Rev. Fr. Maria Michael, in his message, prompted the students to be God fearing and hard working in order to succeed in life. S. Fatima Rosaline Mary, Associate Professor, Research Centre of Commerce; M. Kamala, Associate Professor, Research Centre of Tamil, and Linta Joseph, Junior Assistant, were honoured by secretary Rev. Sr. M. Francisca Flora and Principal Rev. Sr. K. Fatima Mary on the occasion. Susan Andrews, president (regular courses), Student Union, proposed a vole of thanks.

School cabinet

The ‘school cabinet’ of Velammal Vidyalaya (CBSE), Madurai, was inaugurated on July 2 by A. Kanakeswari, Assistant Commissioner of Police. While administering the oath to the newly elected leaders, she emphasised the need to inculcate morals and values in the young minds. Johnson proposed a vote of thanks.

Ariviyal Solai

Innovation Society

Ariviyal Solai Innovation Society formed by Karthik, research scholar, Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, and Chandru of BVC Export, was inaugurated at Thiagarajar Model Higher Secondary School, Madurai, on June 27 Nagarajan of National Institute of Technology, Manipur.

The objective of Ariviyal Solai is to promote science and technology and engage the students in finding scientific solutions to the problems on their surroundings with the help of motivated teachers and a corresponding resource person/innovator. Its aim is to create awareness/promote scientific activities among school and college students in their mother tongue, especially in rural areas. Ariviyal Solai will conduct periodic science-related activities in these concepts -- science from textbook; science in day-to-day life; science for fun and recent scientific inventions/innovations.

Senthil Arasu, Headmaster, welcomed the gathering at the inaugural function. Mr. Karthik delivered introductory remarks. Anand, teacher, proposed a vote of thanks.

Legal awareness programme

The Centre for Women Empowerment of Saraswathi Narayanan College, Madurai, organised a legal awareness programme for first-year UG girl students recently in which T. Paneerselvam, sub-judge and secretary, Madurai District Legal Services Authority, was the chief guest. Ala. Chidambaram, president, Madurai District Consumer Protection Council, delivered a lecture on Consumer Protection Act. Advocates Jeganathan and Selvaraj spoke about cyber crime and other social media offences. P. Veerammal, Coordinator of the forum, welcomed the gathering. M. Kannan, Principal, presided over the meeting. N. Karthiga Devi proposed a vote of thanks.

Cancer awareness

rally taken out

About 400 students, including NCC cadets, National Service Scheme volunteers and Scouts, of Al-Ameen Higher Secondary School, Madurai, took out a cancer awareness rally from K. Pudur to Athikulam recently. The rally, which was jointly organised with Life Giving Trust and Dr. Aravind Memorial Cancer Foundation, was flagged off by S. Sheik Nabi, Headmaster. Mohamed Idris, correspondent, presided over the event.
