Relevance of myth

The Department of English of Thiagarajar College, Madurai, organised a seminar on ‘Relevance of myth in modern literature’ on February 25. The resource person, Joseph Chandra of Loyola College, explained how knowledge began with definition and myths in a means of responding to and experiencing the world. Principal T. Rajasekar, in his inaugural address, dealt with Indian myth’s connection to the modern world.

More than 100 students from colleges across the State presented their research papers.

Health and hygiene

The Department of Zoology of Yadava College, Madurai, conducted an awareness programme on health and hygiene through folk songs and dance by Madurai Govindarajan’s team in Chettikulam panchayat on February 20. S. Dhanasekaran,

Principal in charge, presided over the programme in the presence of S. Ramasamy, vice-president of Chettikulam panchayat. The folk art team stressed the need for upkeep of health and hygiene and created an awareness of the impact of dengue and swine flu. It also emphasised the efficacy of ‘papaya leaf juice’ and ‘nilavembu kashayam’ in the management of dengue and swine flu. K. Neethirajan, Head, Department of Zoology, presided over the extension activity.

Big data analytics

A workshop on ‘Big data analytics, mining and tools’ was conducted by the Department of Computer Science, Lady Doak College, Madurai, on February 27. M. Thangaraj, Associate Professor, Madurai Kamaraj University, in his inaugural address, termed the importance of big data analytics the need of an hour “since in today’s world data exploded every day in many forms.”

A session on ‘Internet of things’ was handled by Anuradha of IT Infrastructure, Chennai, who explored the future paradigm shift from ‘Internet of computers to Internet of things.’ Suguna of Sri Meenakshi Government College for Women shared her research experience in handling web log data using various tools. N Jayachandra, Head, Department of Computer Science, welcomed the participants.

Sports meet

The 62nd annual sports meet of Fatima College, Madurai, featured a colourful march past by students. It was declared open by R. Selvaraju, Deputy General Manager, Indian Bank. B. Udhaya, students’ union secretary, welcomed the gathering. The Principal, Sr. Jospin Nirmala Mary, presided over the meet. A cultural programme hosted by the sports stars lent sheen to the occasion. It was followed by a demonstration of rope yoga and karate. G. Umaiyal, Deputy Commissioner of Police, distributed prizes to winners of various events. Velankanni Matharasi, Physical Director, presented the annual report.

‘Vagai Vizha’

The Tamil Department of Madurai Sivakasi Nadars Pioneer Meenakshi Women’s College, Poovanthi, celebrated ‘Vagai Vizha’ recently. Students participated in several cultural events. Tamilkanal distributed prizes to winners of competitions organised as part of the festival. P. Karthigaiselvi welcomed the gathering. C. Ramalakshmi, Principal, offered felicitations. P. Seethalakshmi presented the annual report. S. Kalaivani proposed a vote of thanks.

Eco-trek

Student Nurses Association members and National Service Scheme volunteers of C.S.I. Jeyaraj Annapackiam College of Nursing and Allied Sciences, Madurai, undertook an eco- trek to Puliyoothu in the Western Ghats near Bodi Mettu as part of an eco conservation and awareness campaign. The students spotted many birds and plant species during the walk. C. Jothi Sophia, Principal, accompanied the students.

Annual Day

The ninth Annual Day of SPJ Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Madurai, was celebrated recently. Sellur K. Raju, Minister for Cooperation, addressed the students and distributed prizes to toppers and winners of various competitions. R. Gopalakrishnan, MP, participated in the function. P. Abarna, correspondent, presided. A. Ajitha, vice-president, welcomed the gathering.

Topper honoured

Sakkudi Kalyani Matriculation School, Madurai, celebrated its 14th Annual Day on February 20. S.P. Srinivasan of Government College, Munnar, presided over the function. P. Thiruppathi, Managing Trustee, Sakkudi Ponmedu Trust, welcomed the gathering. The Principal, S. Venketalekshmi, presented the annual report. Film artiste ‘Delhi’ Ganesh addressed the gathering. Inspector of Matriculation Schools M. Govindharajan gave away the prizes. K. Saisnegha, who secured 485 marks in Tenth public examinations, was given a cash award of Rs. 5,000 by Sakkudi Sri S. Ponnuchamy Teacher Educational Welfare Trust. Correspondent P. Gopalakrishnan proposed a vote of thanks.

Academic Day

Amutham Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Madurai, celebrated its 17th Academic Day with a talk by M. Kannan, Principal, Saraswathi Narayanan College. S. George Ford, correspondent, presided over the function. Sornam Franklin, Senior Principal, welcomed the gathering. Dr. Kannan also distributed prizes and certificates to winners of various competitions. M. Jeyasheela, Principal, proposed a vote of thanks.
