Government officials in the Nilgiris on Sunday said they would undertake a survey of a disputed small strip of land adjoining Wayanad district in Kerala after the Naam Tamilar Katchi alleged that the land belonging to Nilgiris Revenue Department has been illegally transferred to the neighbouring State.
Activists from the group claimed that a river acted as a natural boundary between the Nilgiris district in Tamil Nadu and Wayanad in Kerala.
The small strip of land under dispute, which is in Thalur in Pandalur, reportedly belonged to a local who was paying taxes to the Revenue Department in the Nilgiris. However, the land was reportedly purchased a few years ago by a person who built a house and got permission to set up a line of shops there. It has been alleged that an electricity connection was also procured from the electricity board in Wayanad.
In 2015, members of the Naam Tamilar Katchi said the group had hoisted its party flag on the patch of land in question. He said the group tried to put up a memorial plaque commemorating Tamil scholar and politician M.P. Sivagnanam on Saturday but were prevented from doing so by officials from Kerala, mostly councillors and revenue department officials.
