It had been brought from Tiruchi to Salem for a marriage function

A 42-year-old elephant, belonging to a private person, and brought from Tiruchi to Salem for a marriage function, was seized by forest department officials, here on Wednesday.

Based on a tipoff, members of Wildlife and Nature Conservation Trust, led by S. Sharavanan and Assistant Conservator of Forests Mohanram visited the marriage hall in Shankar Nagar and found the elephant.

No documents

The caretaker failed to produce any documents.

It was revealed that the elephant was brought frequently to Salem during marriage functions and displayed on the premises.

Forest department officials seized the elephant and sent it to Kurumbapatti Zoological Park, on the city outskirts.
