The Cuddalore Central Prison officials on Sunday seized a cell phone near the cell of a convict lodged in the high security block in the premises.

Jail department officials said a team led by Jail Superintendent A. Murugesan conducted a routine check in block II in the high security block.

One of the warders unearthed the instrument near the cell of Shahul Hamid, an accused in the Coimbatore bomb blasts case. Soon after the cellphone was seized officials also conducted a search in the cell of Shahul Hamid.

Jail officials said Shahul Hamid was recently shifted from the high security Puzhal Prison to the Cuddalore Central Prison.

The Cuddalore old town police have registered a case and are investigating.
