A. Sowkath Ali was elected chairman of the Salem branch of the Southern India Regional Council of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India for 2015-16 at its meeting held here recently. The other office-bearers are: A.V. Arun (vice-chairman); R. Raveendran (secretary); and I. Sivakumar (treasurer). V. Madhukar was elected chairman of the Southern India Chartered Accountants Students Association.

The police on Tuesday arrested Basha (67) of Kumarasamipatti on charge of possessing ganja.
He was found to be carrying 250 gm ganja concealed in his inner garment.
