According to the statistics provided by the Selection Committee of the Directorate of Medical Education (DME), fewer students are applying for MBBS/BDS this year when compared to 2017. As of now, a total of 38,271 forms have been issued - 24,933 forms for seats under the government quota and 13,338 for seats under the management quota .
“Last year, we received a total of 51,873 forms including those from students who had downloaded the forms from the website. With June 19 being the last date for submitting applications, we expect the final number after taking in account the downloaded forms to be around 45,000 but not more,” said a senior official.
“In 2017, it was the first time that the medical admission was based on the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) score. Students had no idea of whether their NEET score would fetch them a seat. But this year, they have a better idea. They know the NEET score ranges that could fetch seats, and have assessed whether they stand a chance or not,” the official added.
Students and their parents made a beeline to Selection Committee offices on DME premises to submit the forms for admission to MBBS/BDS as Monday was the last date for issuing forms. The application forms were collected in two separate drop boxes for government and management quota.
Several students have applied for seats under both quotas. One of the students said, “There was a slight confusion in the coding in the form meant for management quota seats. There was no clarity in the boxes to fill for civic status and income certificate.” There were many students, who had come from other districts such as Villupuram and Tirunelveli to submit the forms.
