With a noble principle to feed poor people by eliminating their hunger pangs, the civic body here has launched ‘Anbodu Thoothukudi - Atchayapathiram,’ a scheme under which bread loaves, biscuit packets, cakes, fruits and vegetables will be kept on the premises of Corporation so that they can be taken for free by those in search of food.

Corporation Commissioner Alby John Varghese, who launched the scheme here on Tuesday, said food items that needed refrigeration would be kept in a fridge on the premises to prolong the shelf life. This Deepavali, those who come in search of food could also take away used books, clothes and footwear, kept in a separate rack. This facility would remain open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. on all days of the week, Mr. Varghese said.

He appealed to the people to donate old clothes, utensils, toys, footwear and other items so that they could be kept on the rack meant for the needy. He said this initiative would spur people to involve themselves in more charitable activities.

Conditions for donors

A big board placed on the Corporation office premises has listed the following conditions to be followed by donors:

Packaged water bottles must be in a sealed condition; food items must be hygienic; if the food was bought, it must be from registered hotels; tinned food must be of good quality; home-made food and packed items will be accepted; and raw meat and fish, partially consumed food and expired or about to expire food items will not be accepted.
