With the death of CPI MLA S.P. Muthukumaran in a road accident on Sunday, the central region will witness a second by-election and the State, the third, since the formation of the new government in May last.

Tiruchi West was the first Assembly constituency in the State to go for by-election. The seat fell vacant following the death of Minister Mariam Pichai in a road accident on the Tiruchi-Chennai national highway.

The AIADMK retained the seat in the October 13 by-election.

The by-election to the Pudukottai constituency is expected to take place in six months. Pudukottai will be going for by-elections for the second time. The first one in this constituency was held in February 1997 following the demise of then MLA and DMK strong man A. Periannan. In the by-election, DMK retained the seat.

The death of Minister C. Karuppusamy caused the by-election in the Sankarankoil reserved constituency in Tirunelveli district and the AIADMK retained the seat.
