Notification after judgment copy

September 28, 2014 09:10 am | Updated 09:10 am IST - CHENNAI:

Only on the receipt of a copy of the judgment of the Special Court will the Assembly Secretariat be able to notify the vacancy in the Srirangam Assembly constituency, held by AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa, according to Assembly Secretary A.M. P. Jamaludeen.

“I cannot go by media reports,” he said, asked when the notification would be issued.

As per the Representation of the People Act, the by-election has to be held within six months from the date of occurrence of vacancy.

In the 2011 Assembly elections, Ms. Jayalalaithaa won the Srirangam seat, defeating her nearest rival N. Anand of the DMK by 41,848 votes. She secured 1,05,328 votes out of the 1,78,646 votes polled.
